Importance of Social Infrastructure and Education Infrastructure

Human development & improvement in the quality of life is the ultimate
objective of all planning progammes leading to higher economic & social
development.
There exist a very strong linkage between attaining economic prosperity &
health, longevity, literacy & environmental sustainability.
Social infrastructure includes facilities & measures for providing education,
health care, community development, equitable income distribution,
employment & social welfare.
Major social policy concerns of the Government included the provision of
infrastructure services, fostering Government & community partnerships,
community capacity building, integrated service delivery & social justice.
The aim of social & economic development in a State is to improve the
quality of living standards of the people.
Government’s efforts in promoting equality for all, the Government needs
to focus on the following aspects….
1. Providing basic human needs.
2. Promoting participation of women in development & ensuring gender
equality.
3. Improved delivery of infrastructure services with emphasis on the ppr
& building their capacity for sustenance.
4. Self guarding human rights & providing good governance.
5. Seeking private sector participation in development of areas like
tertiary education.
6. Building a clean & healthy environment.
Social development is generally measured by three groups of factor.
1. Demography
2. Literacy
3. Level of Economic Development
The Human Development Index (HDI) has become an important index for
measuring index for measuring the progress of states in terms of the level
& depth of human development of its citizens.
HDI is a composite index of three main components of human
development.
1) Knowledge Measured by literacy & children’s enrolment in schools.
2) Longevity Measured by expectancy of life at birth.
3) Access to resources to lead
a reasonable quality of life
Measured by an adjusted per capita income.
HDI offers an alternative to GDP for measuring the relative socioeconomic
progress at the national, state & district level.
 Education Infrastructure
Education is the backbone of social & economic development.
It acts as the catalyst for Human resources development (HRD).
Education imparts knowledge and skills, and shapes values and attitudes.

Focuses on regions of extreme poverty & low female
literacy.
Initiated by GOI in 1994 & funded by international donor
agencies.
4) The Education
Guarantee scheme of
the Government
Aims to insure that primary education is available within
a kilometer of every habitation.
Distance learning education in collaboration with United
Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO).
