Urban Infrastructure : Status

1. Water Supply 2. Sewerage & Sanitation 3. Solid Waste Management

Water Supply
As on 1991, 81.38 % of urban households covering 85 % of the urban
population had access to safe drinking water
.
In 1988, 89.58 % of urban households had access to drinking water
facilities within the premises & 40/13 % within a distance 0.5 km.
Even though there has been a significant improvement in availability of
water, there is no room for complacency for the following three reasons.
1. Even though the average availability of water is encouraging in the
country, there are large distribution inequities within the states &
settlements within a city.
2. The per capita water consumption is still below international norms.
3. The quality of water leaves a lot to be desired both in terms of level of
treatment & regularity of supply.
 Sewerage & Sanitation
Around 89 % & 31 % of households in rural & urban areas don’t have any
toilet facilities.
In urban areas, out of those having toilets….
39 % - Flushing System
38 % - A septic tank system
Only 64 % of the households, covering 66 % of the population, have
access to toilet facilities within the premises.
According to surveys up to March 1992 only 48 % of the urban population
had been covered from the sanitation point of view.
 Solid Waste Management
With changing lifestyles, consumption patterns have changed both
quantitatively and qualitatively.
