Status of Ports and Air Transport

Indian Coastline – Around 6,000 Km
Major Ports – 11 – 95 % of traffic handling
Minor Ports – 139
It is imperative that ports be developed in a manner such that they can be
more efficient in stacking, loading, unloading & evacuating cargo.
The major bottlenecks in port management seem to be…
1. Generating Resources
2. Using them effectively in asset creation
3. Effective & efficient operations management
To overcome the bottlenecks, better stake holding by involving the private
sector has been recommended.
TISCO – Leased berths a Haldia – Private Investor
Private investor could also rehabitate, operate & maintain container
terminals as has been done in the case of JNPT.
Status of Air Transport
International Airports – 4
Handles all international traffic along with 40 % of the domestic
traffic.
Domestic Airports – 85
Increase in the Air Traffic – Government Policy – open skies
The first to be liberalized was the air cargo service
Growth in the aviation sector is primarily due to the private operators
Its growth is a result of a need for an efficient & speedy door to door
cargo delivery requirement
 Power Infrastructure
Main sources of commercial energy
Coal Natural Gas
Lignite Electricity
Petroleum
