Status of Road and Shipping

GNP – Gross National Product
GNP is the measure of nation’s total market of goods & services that are
produced annually.
GNP per capita = Country’s gross national product / Population.
Spital Density = Country’s road length per land area
Road density = Length of the road network per capita
Classification of Roads
o NH – National Highway – 34,000 kms
o SH – State Highway – 1,31,000 kms
o 2 % lane of (1,65,000 kms) – 4 Lane
o 34 % length – 2 Lane
o 64 % length – Single lane
Road conditions in India are among the worst in the world.
Commercial vehicles in India are able to run only 250 kms on an average,
per day, as compared to 600 kms per day in the developed countries.
The accident rates per vehicle-km are among the highest in the world.
With a GDP growth rate of 7 %, the road traffic is expected to grow at a
rate of 10 % per annum.

Average age of Indian Fleet – 15 years
Technological revolution in transportation world – Containerization
Containerization has brought about a technological revolution in
transportation world on account of benefits such as door-to-door delivery,
speedy intermodal transfers, low handling costs, reduced breakage &
pilferage, lower insurance costs, etc.
