 Formulates the policy regarding Power Sector
 It is responsible for the administration of The Indian Electricity Act,
1910 & The Electricity (Supply) Act, 1948 and for undertaking such
amendments to these acts as may be necessary from time to time.
The Central Electricity Authority is constituted under the electricity (supply)
Act – advices the DoP on technical & Economic matters.

The Power sector is plagued by
 Major revenue shortfalls due to low tariffs
 Heavy cross subsidies
 Extremely poor collection performance
The inability of the state sector to discipline its management and
workforce, large-scale corruption & leakages, load & system imbalances
brought about by inadequate investments in distribution systems and in
hydel capacities.
The political inability to raise the price of power for the household & the
agricultural sectors, has further contributed to the structured weakness of
the state electricity board system
